Local mothers from the Majura Women’s Group have created a large mosaic artwork, “heartland” to express their love for their home, Canberra.
The artwork will be permanently housed at Kippax Library in Holt. MLA Mary Porter will officially launch the mosaic at 10:30 am tomorrow, Thursday 11 June, at the library in front of a crowd of guests, library users, group members and their children.
The women worked with well-known local community artist Tess Horwitz to design and make the mosaic, meeting each fortnight through 2008 and early 2009 to develop the project, which was funded by ArtsACT.
The design features echoes of many aspects of Canberra’s history, environment and geography – Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, bogong moths, Parliament House, Northbourne Avenue, falling autumn leaves and the Canberra bushfires of 2003.
Majura Womens Group started almost thirty years ago to provide women at home with small children opportunities to meet and develop new skills. The group’s artworks can be seen all over Canberra, including works donated to Dickson Pool, the QEII Family Centre, Calvary and Canberra hospitals, Dickson Public Library and Goodwin Village demential unit in Ainslie.
The group and its sister organisation, the Brindabella Womens’ Group, receive ongoing funding from the ACT government and welcome new members. The group’s website is http://majurawomensgroup.net
